There is no doubt that edibles are a delicious alternative for medicating for patients who aren’t interested in smoking cannabis. However, proper dosing can become a daunting task and for inexperienced users it can be overdone making the experience more of a dysphoria rather than euphoria. Bodies metabolize THC at different rates so an important thing to keep in mind is that not everyone will react to an edible in the same way.

Starting dosage

“Start low; go slow,” is a good rule of thumb when it comes to medicating with edibles.

Inexperienced Cannabis User

For anyone that is new to cannabis should stick to a low dose to start. One to five milligrams of THC is a safe bet until you are familiar with how your body responds to THC

Occasional Cannabis User

If you have consumed cannabis before, it is likely that you have a good idea how your body will react to THC. A ten milligram dose is a good place to start for patients that have experimented with cannabis for treatment before.

Frequent Cannabis User

Frequent use of cannabis results in a higher tolerance to THC. Although cannabis’s risk, or lack thereof, of an overdose makes it an incredibly safe form of medicating, you should consult your caregiver before choosing an edible to ensure proper dosage.

Not all edibles are created equal

For some edibles are not an attractive method of medicating with cannabis because of the guess work involved in consuming them. Is this piece too big? How many milligrams of THC am I actually getting? These are common questions and real concerns, especially for patients that aren’t yet comfortable with dosing themselves.

Luckily, the edible space in the cannabis industry has products that have answered these questions for patients. Pre-dosed, and often times individually wrapped, edibles exist on the market that take the guess work out of edible consumption. Patients can now rest assured that the dose accuracy in their edibles will provide them with the same relief every time.

1. Start with one dose.

What to do if you get “too high”

Consuming too much THC could lead people to have a bad high where anxiety or paranoia kick in. This is not a pleasant feeling and can make someone feel like it is the end, but rest assured that the feeling will pass and that marijuana fatality is at an astounding rate of zero.

Remedies:
– DON’T PANIC… try to calm down; Worrying about the THC induced anxiety will only heighten it. Lay back and breathe.
– Hydration is key. Drinking water will not only make you feel better, it gives you something to focus on besides the feeling of paranoia.
– Take a walk. Exercising helps to bring you down from a high.
– Take CBD

CBD

CBD (cannabidiol), the non-psychoactive component of cannabis, has been found to be able to counteract the effects of the THC in people. Think of it as a dimmer switch to your high. CBD balances the buzz and softens a high when it becomes too intense. There is a caveat to this remedy in that you have to take into consideration your body’s unique biology on how it metabolizes CBD and the intensity and nature of the anxiety.

Choosing your CBD product:
* Your CBD products should be lab tested to ensure right amount of CBD will be delivered

– Smoking or vaping (results in the fastest relief)
– Ingestible oil (gives you the highest concentration of CBD)
– Edibles (takes the longest to feel relief)

Although smoking gets quick results, it’s not the healthiest way to consume medical cannabis. Even though it’s not considered as harmful as cigarettes, smoking cannabis can affect the lungs and lead to respiratory issues. As a result, more and more patients are turning to other ways to consume marijuana.

Vaporizers
Next to smoking, vaporizing is the most popular alternative. Vaporizers heat cannabis at lower temperatures than required for traditional smoking, releasing medicinal qualities without the elements which are considered harmful in smoking. Because a mild vapor, not smoke, is released when exhaled, the odor is much less pungent and therefore more discrete.
There are many kinds of vaporizers available, from pricier tabletop devices to less expensive portable pens. When buying a vaporizer consider your priorities. If you want a workhorse that lasts longer you’d probably do well to get a tabletop model. If you’re looking for something small and portable, you’ll have plenty of brands and cannabis products to choose from.

Ediblesterra
Edibles come in a variety of forms including candy and baked goods. Cannabis is infused in edibles in the form of oils or butter extracted from marijuana. The effects of this form are slow to be felt — it generally takes one to two hours — but longer lasting. Because of this, it’s easy to over medicate on edibles. It’s recommended that patients eat with caution, consuming a small dose at first (10mg) and setting it aside for an hour or two before deciding if it’s wise to eat more.

Tea
The most common drink for consuming cannabis is tea, although cannabis sodas are now available in some areas. With tea, patients can add milk and spices for flavor. Some include hard liquor in the mix. The effects can be felt up to several hours.
Cannabis tea is made by pouring boiling water over leaves and stems, either in a teapot or cup. Let it steep for a minimum of thirty minutes. Adding milk, alcohol, butter or oil is recommended as THC is not water soluble. As mentioned above, some patients add milk and spices; experiment to find the flavor that’s just right for you.

CBD-Oil-ACDCTinctures
Tinctures or tonics made from cannabis can be added to food or liquids, or you can place drops under the tongue. This form is the most popular and commonly used from of non-smoking administration. The health benefits are numerous and they are often used as an anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-nausea and seizure control medication.
Tinctures are made by soaking medical marijuana flower tops and leaves in alcohol. After letting the concoction steep for awhile, a strainer is used to separate the solids from the liquid. The liquid is then dosed under the tongue or mixed with oil as cannabinoids are fat soluble. Typically, dosing is dependent on the product received. High concentrates start at a drop the size of a grain of rice three times a day as you titrate up to a full mL daily. Pre-mixed oils tend to start at a half a mL twice a day as you titrate up as needed.

Topicals
Cannabis-infused lotions, balms, sprays and ointments are applied directly on the skin. This form, which does not produce psychoactive effects, is known to be an effective anti-inflammatory and painkiller. Patients have used cannabis topicals to treat everything from chapped skin, sunburns and eczema to arthritis, sore muscles and tendonitis.
Transdermal patches and gel pens are also available, and they are available with CBD or THC. Patches adhere to the skin and are used for effective pain relief. Patients who use patches often also keep a gel pen on hand to help with any breakthrough pain.

Juicing raw cannabis has become a “thing,” and with good reason. Like many vegetables and fruits, cannabis loses much of its healthful nutrients and enzymes when heated. Raw cannabis has no psychoactive effects.

Cannabis juicing is a great alternative or supplement to traditional prescribed medications. It’s also a good option for children and patients who don’t want a medicinal high.

Higher doses can be tolerated.

Because it doesn’t produce a high, cannabis juicing makes it possible to take in higher doses of cannabinoids, the plant’s medical components.

Cannabis juicing requires access to fresh plants.

This means you must be able to harvest from your own plants every day. Fresh is best, so keep in mind that cannabis prepared for smoking isn’t suitable for juicing.

You should drink juiced raw cannabis throughout the day.

Dr. Courtney recommends cannabis juicing fifteen leaves and two large raw buds every day. This will yield enough to drink some with three meals a day. You can also refrigerate juice in a well-sealed container for up to three days.

Juicing is versatile.

By itself, raw cannabis has a bitter taste, so it is best when combined with another liquid. Carrot juice is a popular option, but experiment to find your favorite. Since raw cannabis is fat soluble, some patients prefer to juice with high-fat liquids such as yogurt, ice cream, hemp, or coconut milk.

The Process

A good word of caution when buying edibles is to look for products that are clearly labeled with serving size. Some edibles can be too strong for people who have a low tolerance. For those of us who like preparing edibles ourselves, it is a learning curve to make our product portion specific, especially for those with a temptation to eat too much.

 

The Future Of Edibles

Here in San Diego, there is a push to get government oversight with products on the market. This may help to reduce any discomfort with experimenting for the correct dosage. Professional marijuana edible producers are pushing for better warning label laws and training for people who are making edibles at dispensaries. Without these laws, people are selling home-cooked edibles online with no indication of THC content and marijuana volume. This can be extremely problematic, and there have been a few instances where medical marijuana patients have been unaware of edibles effects, eaten too much, and had unpleasant experiences. Legislators in states that have completely legalized medical marijuana, like Colorado, are considering creating laws that would require the edibles themselves to be marked showing that they contain cannabis. As a whole, medical marijuana groups are supporting the creation of laws like these to keep the future of cannabis safe.
